Although I’m not a US citizen, I can understand the logic with having the 2nd amendment. Historically it made sense during the colonial times with a new government and the threat of the British crown.
But with today’s modern army and organisation, how would a civilian militia bearing small arms (semi-automatic rifles) manage to overthrow their own government backed up by the best military in the world? We are talking about mobile infantry, tanks, heavy artillery, air-support and real time satellite links (and I’m not even factoring in the Rangers,Marines or Delta Force).
I can maybe see something like the Tiananmen square protest, where the tanks would refuse to run over an un-armed protester because the soldiers were ethical individuals. But it still ended up with alot of protesters dead and “arrested” indefinitely. We know for a fact that soldiers under duress will “follow orders” and shoot civilians and only a few strong minded individuals would face court martial and disobey the order of putting down a “terrorist” organisation (as any corrupt US government would surely label them as).
Weapons for home defence? Yes, considering the high crime rate in certain US areas. It would not solve the social problem but it might help keep the home safe, although I’d rather see a mandatory gun safety course when you buy a gun. But overthrowing a tyrannical regime?
Can anyone explain how it would be possible for a militia? Or is it more a symbolical gesture? Have the right to picket outside the White House brandishing your guns?
I’m not saying the 2nd amendment should be changed or removed, I just want to understand the logic behind the supporters claims to keep it in modern warfare.

But I still don’t see how the 2nd amendment would help the US citizen retake a corrupt tyrrany or defend the US against a modern invading army.
Hopefully, the US army would stand aside and let the people make a coup to overthrow the corrupt regime (as seen in Thailand a few years ago, but that happened only with the Thai King’s blessing!). But I can see that happening without carrying firearms, as what they did in Thailand and the pacifist monks in Kambodia.
Would the US people only be able to overthrow a corrupt government or win a civil war only by the 2nd amendment when faced by a modern army? Or does the law have to change to allow civilians to buy heavier armaments like attack helicopters and tanks? How else can they defend the US?
