Why young people do not have the same rights as adults?

Idea from JohnAlb1213: Why don’t young people have the same rights as adults?

I’ve had enough of this. Children and teenagers are people too, and unfair discrimination has led to unfair and unconstitutional laws being passed such as curfew laws. The first amendment gives us (the entire country, not just people over the age of eighteen) the right to peaceably assemble, which curfew laws clearly violate. Also, I’m sick and tired of almost everyone in this country unfairly discriminating against us by saying we have no respect for our elders. That’s not true. Most of us respect those older than us because we can learn from them, and we treat them the way we would want to be treated. What if there were laws prohibiting your rights as citizens of the United States of America? According to the FBI “Youth between the ages of 12 and 17 are most at risk of committing violent acts and being victims between 2 p.m. and 8 p.m.” Curfews start at 11. The statistics prove that we’re in more danger during the daytime. Now what? Are you going to completely ban us from stepping outside at all?

Oh, and what’s up with the gangster stereotype, that everyone between the ages of 13 and 17 own a glock, listen to rap, and cuss constantly. If you’re over the age of 18, have kids, and reading this, listen to my advice: We may be 13 now, but 30 years from now, we’re going to be the ones choosing your retirement homes. I would remember that if I were you.

We may be “minors”, but our rights and privileges don’t have to be.

Its to give young people time to grow up an become capable of making intelligent choices and just because someone thinks they are capable enough it doesn’t mean they are. It take time and no teenager wants to wait until they are old enough. I bet in 20 years from now you will understand it

Well, you might be a mature kid for your age, but trust me, you’re one of the few. Maybe your whole school or city is as mature as you, but the rest of world isn’t, for sure. You might just have overbearing parents, but they do it because they love you.

I used to think the same way as you, but as I grew older, I saw that it was a good thing. Also, threatening advice like “we’ll be choosing your retirement homes” makes you seem very young, so I wouldn’t try that with people in real life.

Your emotional outburst and the threat at the end of your post belie your presumed maturity. Given your example, I’m more convinced than ever that curfew laws, and other measures to protect children against themselves – which, by the way, are an embodiment of our societal norms – are correct.

Good Luck!

Because you are stil CHILDREN. Minors do not have and will not have the same rights as adults. When you GROW UP, you will realize why.

Honestly, I’m 14, and I know there are reasons that we don’t have the same rights as adults. I mean, if teenagers could vote, imagine who could end up in office? We’re not ready for responsibilities like that.

Bravo!

I’m 16 and I agree with you, slightly. It’s not entirely fair to judge an entire age group as the same. I don’t really know about the gangster stereotype though.

On the other hand, the only legitimate way to assume responsibility is by age. There’s no way the government could issue a “responsibility test” to all minors to find out which ones can be treated like adults and which ones like teenagers. So age is the only objective way to decide.

And anyway, what’s the hurry to grow up?

Answer by Love Reign O’er Me

yeah, im glad we share the same perspective but remember there are others our age out there that take it upon themselves to jeopardize our rights by showing that not all of us are mature.

and because of those few out there we will never accomplish with having things like the “gangsta label” lifted from us.

Have any idea a lot better?
