America’s intention was to re-establish the pro-American government in Cuba. With Castro taking power, the U.S lost almost all ties with Cuba. Castro himself welcomed the economic, military and political support that his new allies game him, the Soviet Union. The CIA had spent a couple of years training a Cuban force to re-claim the country. If they had succeeded, then Cuba would have become a satellite state of the U.S. The invasion was horrible, and the U.S lost the chance to re-take Cuba. In terms of how it fits into Communism, it was part of the idea of halting the ‘Red Tide’, or the idea that it was better to be ‘dead then red’. Cuba was also harboring Soviet made nuclear missiles, and the U.S had made it a priority to take them out. Hope this helps.

You have to remember: There were NO U.S. military Special Forces to assist in the Bay Of Pigs mission to overthrow Castro’s communist hold on Cuba. The CIA and Army personnel ( and a few Mafia “goodfellas” ) training those Cuban exiles were mediocre in combat fight expertise, if that.
JFK was deliberately misinformed by the CIA on pretty much all aspects of this daring debacle–as evidenced in JFK’s timing on aborting the mission, not realizing those Cuban exiles were already on Cuba’s shores when the order was given; you know the rest of that tragic story. Now you see why JFK wanted to totally dissolve the CIA; their deceit caused not only the Bay Of Pigs—but the Cuban Missile Crisis—and nearly, WW 3.
Many purport U.S. interest in Cuba centered on making the island a gambling mega-plex that would dwarf any grand spectacle Las Vegas could muster—on top of being part of the U.S. for strategic reasons; the Mafia / CIA “marriage” explained.
