There are thousands of examples. It also isn’t a philosophical issue. Wrong forum. Ask an English professor, not a philosopher.

“the” is the definite article, but it is not applied to names. You don’t say, “the New York” for example.
Abbreviations that are pronounced, like NASA, are typically treated as names. Abbreviations that are not pronounced, like FBI, are still treated to the definite article. “The FBI”
But that’s not a hard and fast rule. It really just depends on what habits have built up. For example, in California, they typically refer to a road as “I’m driving on the 101″. In Atlanta, highway numbers are treated as names, as in “I’m driving on 75.”

“NASA” is an acronym. Thats how acronyms are used. Its not an abbreviation.
