Challenge created by EllzBellz: Which historians think Vietnam was a necessary war and which think it was a choice?

Hello, I have an essay based on this topic, and I have found Lind believes it was necessary and Logeville believes it was President Lyndon B Johnson’s choice – or at least that it wasnt inevitable.

I plan to base my essay around their arguments, but i was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction as to historians who have a stong, clear stance on either side of the argument, I’m struggling with this!

Thanks so much in advance!

It is guidance on Which historians think Vietnam was a necessary war and which think it was a choice? that you can should fix situations only on their. Subsequently this element helps in many ways; to create your life significantly better. With the expectation guidance on Which historians think Vietnam was a necessary war and which think it was a choice? might be an option later in life.

The Second Indochinese (Vietnam) War started either in May 1954 according many historians using the date the US violated the “1954 Geneva Agreements on Indochina” whilst the US military use November 1955 as the start date because that is when the first US military advisers were sent to Southern Vietnam.

It was President Eisenhower who was in power when the war started with JFK only increasing the number of advisers and LBJ increasing them more along with expanding the war to include “combat” troops, the US marines in April 1965.

If Eisenhower had not violated the agreements and international law, the war would never have occurred.

I suggest reading –

“Vietnam” by Jean Lacoutre and translated to English by Malcolm Salmon. Jean Lacoutre was a French journalist and historical author who was always against the war.

“My War with the CIA”, by Prince Norodom Sihanouk and Wilfred Burchett. Burchett was a left-wing Australian journalist and historical author. Norodom Sihanouk was the Head of State of Cambodia . Both were against the war.

“Vietnam”, by Stanley Karnow.

“Dispatches”, by Michael Herr

“In Search of Southeast Asia”, edited by Dr. David Chandler. Professor Chandler is an American and former diplomat to Cambodia. His attitudes are fairly neutral as a Southeast Asia historian. He is also one of the top four “Cambodian” historians worldwide.

“History of Southeast Asia”, by DGH Hall. His reports are also neutral as a Southeast Asian historian.

“From Vietnam to Baghdad” by Peter Arnett, a former New Zealander who took American citizenship. He was a journalist in Vietnam and some of his material is anti-war whilst other areas are pro-war.

“The Pentagon Papers”,published by the New York Times. It is very critical of the US involvement and was written by US Military of Defence and State Department personnel.

There are also several biographies and autobiographies about Nixon, Kissinger, LBJ, Eisenhower etc that you should read. All of these give pro-US involvement in the war.

Hum…? Do you intend to draw your own conclusion, or just contrast the arguments of the two authors you are featuring? If you are simply going to be contrasting the two you have enough to proceed. Frankly that is what I would go with if I were doing your essay. And that’s my advise rather than a long reading list either pro or con…. Good luck with you essay….
