Go coddle him in prison if he’s such a nice guy. Seriously, the man attended Al Qaeda training camps. Yes that little piece paper with his fingerprints on it was enough to convict him. Sorry you guys lost another liberal posterboy who would be a face for bashing the Bush administration. But he was training to be a terrorist and was planning on killing people. Why you feel sorry for him is beyond me.

Good point, Jose Padilla was held for 3 1/2 years without charges ever being brought up against him, and was even denied an attorney. He finally was allowed to have one right before the case went to the Supreme Court. This completely violated his fifth and sixth amendment rights right there. The government then accuses him plotting to denoate a “dirty bomb”, but instead he gets charges brought up on him for supporting terrorists. Him being held without charges against him should have thrown up a huge red flag. Him being denied a lawyer should of done the same. And should of sent a message that maybe the government doesn’t have anything on him. By the way, at the time the government said it was “allowing Padilla access to counsel as a matter of discretion and military authority. Such access is not required by domestic or international law and should not be treated as a precedent.” This was a carefully determined tactic. By granting Padilla access to a lawyer, the government was trying to prevent the Supreme Court from ruling on whether they had to provide Padilla with a lawyer. Now his case has made it back to the Supreme Court. Again, the Supreme Court is about to decide whether to hear his case. And, again, the government has decided that, at its discretion, it will grant Jose Padilla his constitutionally guaranteed rights. The government will now try to convince the Supreme Court and that Padilla’s claims are irrelevant because he’s been charged with a crime. By doing so, the government will retain its self-appointed power to lock you up without a lawyer or criminal charges until the Supreme Court rules on your case, which we’ve seen can take years. So, a small degree of celebration is in order. But the problem has always been more about what power the president claims to have than about this one case. Now Padilla being charged isn’t a sign that the Bush administration tyrants have had a change of heart, but simply a tactic of that tyranny. To sum it up: Padilla will get a trial so that you won’t when they come for you. Why are we allowing our government to do this, and why are we allowing the government to take our Constitutional rights away from us?
